(FLINT, Mich., April 26, 2022) – Michigan Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist will deliver the commencement address for Mott Community College’s (MCC ) graduation ceremonies on at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30, in the Dort Federal Credit Union Event Center, 3501 Lapeer Road in Flint.
“We are honored to have Lt. Governor Gilchrist address our graduates this year as we move back to an in-person commencement,” said MCC President, Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea.
“He has played a seminal role at the state-level in helping support our students through the pandemic years and in creating an environment in which they can continue to thrive as they join the workforce after graduation,” Walker-Griffea added.
Gilchrist is an engineer by training, who uses thoughtful innovation, progressive reform and efficient modernization of policies and programs to make the world better for hardworking families. From spearheading campaigns for equality and justice to harnessing technology to solve real problems, his focus has consistently remained on serving the public and getting things done. His key priority is to bring Michigan’s state government fully into the 21st century.
As part of the Whitmer Administration, he has sought to address injustice and inequity across the state. From co-chairing the Michigan Joint Task Force on Jail and Pretrial Incarceration to helming the Coronavirus Task Force on Racial Disparities, these task forces have taken actions that saved lives and protect vulnerable populations. His approach to addressing these disparities is deeply rooted in fact-based practices, science, and connecting with individuals across Michigan.
Approximately 400 graduating students will receive associate’s degrees and professional certificates in person on April 30. The Commencement ceremony is an opportunity for the college to pay tribute to its graduates for outstanding efforts shown in earning their degrees and certificates. MCC holds Commencement once a year at the end of the Winter Semester. A total of 1,312 students at MCC are eligible to graduate this year. (Eligible means the students have completed or are within two classes of completing degree requirements). The college offers 42 occupational associate’s degree, four transfer associate degree and 50 professional certificates.
