Valley Area on Aging providing necessary resources for those 60 years and more to remain healthy

Written by Tanya Terry

There are about 99,123 “seniors” living in Genesee County, according to Yaushica Aubert, president and CEO of Valley Area Agency on Aging. This number refers to county residents 60 years of age or older. Approximately 32,918 of these seniors describe themselves as being fraile or disabled.

On May 25 seniors can purchase tickets $4 for Senior Power Day at Crossroads Village. There, they can get information, including vaccine and testing information. In addition, vaccines and boosters will be available.
The Valley Area Agency of Aging was given approximately $50,000 through the NNICE (National Network to Innovate for COVID and Adult Vaccine Equity) grant for the purpose of helping to spread information about vaccinations and boosters. Minority popultions, lower income populations and fraile populations are being targeted. Under the NNICE plan, 515 seniors have already been reached.

Mayor Sheldon Neeley, Rev. Dr. Rabon L. Turner of Grace Emmanuel Baptist Church, President & CEO of Big Brother Lisa Humphrey, Big Sister of Flint & Genesee County Lisa Humphrey and CEO of Mass Transportation Authority Edgar Benning were among many community leaders who spoke on Valley Area on Aging’s video COVID-19 Vaccine Video in partnership with Community Foundation of Greater Flint.

“It was important that a group of community leaders give messages because I feel leaders should lead by example,” Aubert said. “I wanted the public to see that some of leaders speaking about getting vaccinated. All of them except for one are CEOS or executive directors, or the mayor. These leaders felt it was important to share their personal stories. Those leaders were chosen for that very reason. Number one they were to help us reach people in Genesee County with vaccination and booster information.”

Since Genesee County has a high minority population in general, Genesee County leaders were featured talking in the video.

In 2021, the Valley Area Agency on Aging COVID Response Page became available on the agency’s webpage at https://valleyareaaging.org/. Their COVID line is 810-600-0617. Callers will be existed with scheduling their vaccines and booster shots, and the shots are available for homebound seniors and in AFC homes, in partnership with the Genesee Vally Health Plan. The agency gives out food boxes. They post flyers and information regarding the vaccine on social media.
