Genesee County held its primary election August 4, with a 27.7% voter turnout, resulting in 96,861 ballots cast among 349,685 registered voters.
For Flint City Council, the top two vote-getters from each ward advanced to the November 3 general election: Arthur Woodson will face Deborah Coleman in Ward 1; LaShawn Johnson will face Ladel Lewis in Ward 2; Joel Arnold will face DeWaun Robinson in Ward 5; Ezekiel Harris will face Casey Lester in Ward 8.
The 3rd Ward Flint City Council race bypassed a primary election due to there being fewer than three qualified candidates initially approved for the ballot. Redistricting caused current 1st Ward Flint City Councilman Leon El-Alamin’s residence to be inside the newly drawn 3rd Ward boundaries. Therefore, El-Alamain will run for the 3rd Ward seat against Paradise Williams, who is on the ballot, along with certified write in candidate Beverly Biggs-Leavy.
Current Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley will face current City Council Member Tonya Burns.
Cheryl A. Lopez and K.C. Baran advanced to the November election for the 67th District Court bench to succeed judge Mark McCabe.
Republican Bill Bain will compete against current Sen. John Cherry, D-Flint, who was not challenged in the primary, for Michigan’s 27th District State Senate seat.
Republican Larry Hutchinson will face incumbent Cynthia Neeley, D-Flint in the general election for Michigan’s 70th House District seat.
For the U.S. House, Democrat Kristen McDonald Rivet will face Republican Thomas J. Smith, each seeking to represent Michigan’s 8th Congressional District.
