Former Flint City Council Member and Genesee County Commissioner Floyd Clack died on Thursday, April 3. He was 84 years old, and according to his family, he died peacefully surrounded by his wife and children.
Before serving in public office, Clack became worked as social studies teacher at Flint Northern High School.
He also served as the president of the Flint Branch of the NAACP. Because he advocated for Flint’s downtown bus station to be renamed to honor of Rosa Parks, a bronze statue of Parks remains in the bus station, near its entrance.
The City of Flint issued the following statement regarding Clack’s death:
“The City of Flint is deeply saddened by the passing of Floyd Clack, a dedicated public servant and respected leader whose decades of service helped shape the fabric of our community. In honor of his life and legacy, Mayor Sheldon Neeley has ordered flags in front of Flint City Hall to be flown at half-staff for one week beginning Monday, April 7, 2025.
Floyd Clack was a lifelong advocate for education, equity, and public service. His unwavering commitment to the people of Flint and Genesee County spanned numerous roles—from educator and Flint city councilman to Genesee County commissioner and state representative. He worked tirelessly to uplift our community and improve the lives of countless residents.
“‘Floyd Clack was more than a public servant—he served as a role model and mentor to local elected officials,” said Mayor Sheldon Neeley. “He will be remembered for his poise and grace. His leadership and service will live on in the hearts of those he touched. We extend our deepest condolences to his beloved wife Brenda, son, daughter, family and friends. Floyd’s life was a shining example of how one individual can make a lasting difference.”‘
