MCC receives grant to launch YouthBuild Program

(FLINT, Mich, July 24, 2023) — Mott Community College (MCC) has received a $1,499,864.60 grant from the U.S. Dept. of Labor (DOL) to provide pre-apprenticeship services that support education, occupational skills training and employment services for 68 youth aged 18-24 through the MCC YouthBuild (MCCYB) program.

“This is an exciting opportunity for us to support economic development in Flint and Genesee County by providing workforce training and experience to youth who need it the most,” said MCC President, Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea.

She added: “Because of our role as an Adult Education and Literacy provider and experiences serving Opportunity Youth, MCC is well-positioned to deliver this program to ensure participant success and positively impact the Flint community.”

The primary service area includes City of Flint zip codes 48503, 48504, 48505, 48506 and 48507, representing 16 census tracts. Youth will participate in a 26-week curriculum, including 13 hours of academic instruction, 12 hours of occupational skills training, and three hours of leadership per week. Upon program completion, participants will be placed in employment or apprenticeship opportunities, or pursue further educational programs.

“We are thrilled about the opportunity to offer pre-apprenticeship training in the building and construction trades to youth in our community” said Robert Matthews, associate vice president of Workforce and Economic Development at MCC

The MCCYB program has six core components:

  • Education: providing learner-centered individualized curricula by certified teachers leading to the attainment of a high school diploma or GED;

  • Construction Training: providing Building Construction certification, involving hands-on training for the substantial renovation of a home to serve as permanent housing for two homeless and/or low-income individuals and families in Flint;

  • Certified Nursing Assistant Training: providing training that results in portable credentials and employment with an opportunity of potential apprenticeship;

  • Case Management: providing career and education support, including advising and referral for participants for co-enrollment into WIOA;

  • Leadership Development: providing leadership training and opportunities to practice leadership elements, including community service;

  • Transition Services: provide employment and post-secondary placement assistance and 12-month follow-up with support services.
