Kildee announces $480,000 federal grant for Flint MTA

FLINT—Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-08) announced on July 24 new federal funding for the Flint Mass Transportation Authority (MTA).

This federal grant, totaling $480,000 and awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Areas of Persistent Poverty Program, will enable Flint MTA to conduct an environmental remediation study to facilitate its transition and clean up hazardous materials in our community. The Areas of Persistent Poverty Program provides funding to disadvantaged areas to create better transit opportunities for residents.

Flint MTA has been working towards a zero-emissions goal by transitioning from diesel to hydrogen buses and storing the buses at an alternative fuel distribution facility, formerly an auto body shop. However, before continuing development, they must assess what types of hazards are present at the facility.

“Investing in infrastructure and better public transit helps citizens get to work, school and the doctor’s office,” Kildee said. “I am proud to have secured this federal funding for Flint MTA so they can continue to serve our community.”

“MTA Flint is dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint and transitioning to a zero-emission fleet,” said Ed Benning, general manager of Mass Transportation Authority Flint.

“This grant will help us meet this goal in a responsible manner,” Benning added. “We thank Congressman Kildee for his continued support of public transit.”

Congressman Kildee has worked to improve Michigan’s public transportation and infrastructure, including roads, bridges and railroads, since his election to Congress. Last year, Kildee announced a federal grant to help MTA Flint restore transit services that were impacted by the pandemic.
