The Courier visited Mott Community College’s (MCC) amazing Mobile Learning Lab (MLL) on October 22, 2022.  It was parked in Flint’s north end at the Peace Park on M. L. King Blvd.

The Mobile Learning Lab was specifically designed to offer classes in Flint’s neighborhoods and for training at facilities like Lear’s corporate training.

Lo White and Darryl Pettway gave tours of the mobile facility.  Daryl Pettway explained that life happens to derail educational goals, and the Mobile Learning Lab offers options for all.

“You can have stackable credentials and not need a college degree to make a good living,” Pettway stated.

Darryl Pettway explained the vast variety of uses for the Learning Lab and the range of classes available.

Because the Learning Lab can go to its students, it offers options for those for whom transportation is a problem.

The huge space inside was a surprise.  The MLL is a modified 48-foot-long, expandable semi-trailer providing access to modular classrooms as an alternative to traditional on-site classrooms.  One expandable (side) is a classroom with 12 screens and a capacity for 22 students (in pre-COVID measures). Each student on the classroom side will have access to a Chromebook. The middle section and other expandable portion is an advanced manufacturing lab that is adaptable for the class being taught.

Short-term and mid-term training is available for a variety of advanced manufacturing programs. The programs include, but are not limited to: welding, machining, robotics, mechatronics, HVAC, 3D printing, computer literacy and healthcare. Computer certification programs are available, such as computer repair, Google project management and more. The unit will also provide training in literacy, information technology and lifelong enrichment classes for all ages.

Medical training programs are also available in the Mobile Learning Lab.

MCC unveiled its Mobile Learning Lab (MLL) on August 25, 2021.  It is managed by MCC’s Workforce and Economic Development Division.
