FLINT, Mich.—As part of the City of Flint’s Safe & Clean Summer initiative, $200,000 is being proposed to provide summer jobs for Flint kids ages 15-19. The Flint City Council is expected to discuss the resolution Wednesday, April 3.
Youth Job Training is included in the ARPA spending plan that the Flint City Council approved in October 2022. The proposed program provides a specific pathway to allocate the funds for the purpose of Youth Job Training.
“Summer jobs are a great way for young people to learn about the world of work and gain experience,” Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley said.
He added: “They provide positive ways for youth to participate in their communities during the summer, when they might otherwise be lightly supervised while parents are working. As a teenager, I benefited from summer job programs like this one, and it’s important that kids have these valuable opportunities today. This is a win-win: helping kids gain job skills while keeping them safe and out of trouble. This is just one of the ways we’re preparing for a safe and clean summer in the city of Flint.”
The proposed Youth Job Training Program would enable 5 to 7 nonprofit organizations to provide 5-week jobs for up to 10 kids each this summer. Each job would pay $11 per hour for 29 hours each week.
