Flint, Mich. – Spring at FIM means more concerts and shows for families and the community. In May, music, dance and theatre students from FIM Flint School of Performing Arts and professional family friendly artists will light up the stage at FIM Whiting Auditorium and FIM Capitol Theatre.
First up, iLuminate brings its multi-sensory musical experience to Whiting Auditorium May 1 at 8 p.m. iLuminate combines technology and dance, featuring performers in LED suits choreographed to create dynamic visual effects. Named Best New Act in America by “America’s Got Talent” in 2011, dancers perform routines synchronized with lighting effects. Featured music includes top pop and rock hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s, jazz, Latin, hip-hop and more.
iLuminate has been featured on shows like “Dancing with the Stars,” “The X-Factor,” “Good Morning America,” and “The American Music Awards.” It has also shared the stage with stars like Chris Brown, Christina Aguilera and the Black Eyed Peas. This performance is suitable for audiences five years and older and lasts one hour.
The Festival of Dance takes place at 7:30 p.m. May 2 and 3 p.m. May 3 at UM-Flint Theatre. It presents a culmination of work by FSPA dancers, featuring various pieces from ballet and modern dance genres. The performance reflects the dedication and progress of the Flint Youth Dance Ensemble, Flint Children’s Ballet Ensemble and Adult Ballet Ensemble dancers over the academic year.
Flint Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Spring Concert will be at 3 p.m. May 4 at Whiting Auditorium. FYSO finishes its 79th season with a fun mix of classical music and pops, including music from “Wicked” and “Star Wars.” May the 4th be with you!
“James and the Giant Peach” will be presented by Flint Youth Theatre at 7 p.m. May 9 and 2 p.m. May 10 in FIM MacArthur Recital Hall at Dort Music Center. Roald Dahl’s story comes hilariously to life as audiences follow the adventures of James Henry Trotter and his insect friends who journey in a giant peach across the ocean. This family friendly experience highlights the creativity and talent of young local performers.
Finally, Black Violin is returning to FIM Capitol Theatre for the third time at 8 p.m. May 10. Black Violin blends classical music with hip-hop influences, featuring violinists Kev Marcus and Wil Baptiste. Their performance aims to challenge stereotypes and introduce audiences to a unique fusion of genres. The duo is also dedicated to empowering youth and creating access to quality music programs.
“Black Violin is so much bigger than just the music,” says Baptiste. “I think of the people we influence; of looking at little kids’ eyes as they see us perform. You inspire people to be better versions of themselves, and that’s incredible.”
