Cruz-Malik Duhart graduated Summa Cum Laude in the Morehouse 2023 graduating class. Though he was not born in Flint, Duhart moved to Flint in the sixth grade and lived in the area for most of his life. Duhart, who has been a participant in the Flint Public Health Youth Academy since 2019, majored in English, earning a Bachelor of Art.

Duhart had a very positive experience at Morehouse, though his on-campus experience was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“My Morehouse experience was unique because of the pandemic, but I thoroughly enjoyed it,” he said. “Like all institutions, Morehouse has flaws, but supersedes them through its ability to teach the Black perspective in every major and the intriguing faculty and staff that seek to help their students grow.”

Duhart was very active in student life, striking a perfect balance between his studies and cultivating the college experience.

He stated: “Very few graduate schools are HBCUs. So, your best opportunity to attend one is now.”

Duhart also advises that those students who plan to attend an HBCU focus on getting high grade point averages so that they can have a competitive edge when it comes to applying for scholarships to help offset the cost of college.

“High grade point averages help high school students become competitive for scholarships in college. Students should start looking for scholarships during junior year of high school, and by senior year apply for scholarships even if you do not think you qualify.”
