On October 10, Consumers Energy received approval from the Michigan Public Service Commission to continue and strengthen our focus on low-income customers. Updates to their Energy Waste Reduction Plan strengthen their commitment to the Flint community, promoting workforce development and helping households reduce energy waste and their bills. Consumers also said they appreciate the collaboration from the state and stakeholders in updating this plan for their customers.
Key Plan Updates
- Health and Safety Program: Consumers Energy will make its pilot program permanent, helping homes to be more energy-efficient and healthy. They will allocate at least $250,000 for efforts in Flint, focusing on multi-family housing. See our news release on this program from late last year.
- Workforce Development: Targeting resources for workforce development in low-income communities and allocating $250,000 to support Flint’s workforce initiatives.
- Raising the Bar for Energy Savings: Per Michigan’s new energy legislation, this settlement reinforces Consumers Energy’s ambitious energy efficiency targets to save 2% of electric sales and 1% of natural gas sales. To achieve these aggressive goals and focus service on those most in need, Consumers will be enhancing outreach, education and services to lower bills for low-income customers.
“Our energy efficiency programs deliver a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for all Michiganders,” said Lauren Snyder, Consumers Energy’s vice president of customer experience.
Sniyder added: “With today’s approval, Consumers Energy will be able expand outreach efforts and deliver upgrades to our most vulnerable customers that reduce the amount of energy they use, which translates into cost savings on monthly bills.”
