Flint residents react after water credit applied to bills

Written By Jameca Patrick-Singleton

As of Monday October 3, Flint residents should see a $300 water credit that was approved by council last week. According to Mayor Sheldon Neeley, the credits have been applied to all active water accounts. The funds for the credit come from the America Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and this was approved by city council in a 5-2 vote last week. As a result, $8.6 million is allocated towards the credits.

Some council members, including Eric Mays (Ward 1) and Tonya Burns (Ward 6) say that $300 isn’t enough to make a meaningful impact for residents that are constantly struggling to pay high water bills.

Residents express mixed feelings about the credit.

“Though I am happy to see a credit, because it means that I don’t have to worry being disconnected this month, it would be better if my bill was lower every month so that affording the bill would be easier” said Barbara Young, a Flint grandmother.
