Vacancy in the office of council member-7th Ward

Seventh (7th) Ward Flint City Council Member and President Allie Herkenroder has announced her resignation from the City Council effective July 1, 2023.

Pursuant to Flint City Charter §2-410(B)(1), VACANCY IN THE OFFICE OF COUNCIL MEMBER, whenever a vacancy occurs on the City Council and “more than eighteen (18) months remain in any unexpired term, the City Council shall within thirty (30) days appoint a person having the same qualifications for such office.”

Per Flint City Charter §2-410(B)(2) and (3), the City Council shall “schedule a special primary
election as soonas possible to be followed by a special election to fillthe officeforthe balance
of the unexpired term, to be conducted in the same manner as is practical forthe nomination,
primary, and general elections as is provided for in thisCharter.” “The person appointed by
the City Council shall serve until the special election is held and a candidate certified as
elected.”

Flint City Charter §2-101, QUALIFICATIONS FOR ELECTIVE OFFICE, states that, if appointed to the elected office, a City Official shall “be a registered elector of the City for one year prior to the filing deadline for that office and a resident of the ward for which they serve and continue that residency until the end of their term.”

Qualified registered voters, who are residents of the 7th Ward and who are interested in applying for the position of 7th Ward Council Member, can submit a resume/CV/biography or letter of interest as “application” to:
