A tentative work agreement will be presented to the Flint Board of Education on April 3 for approval.

The Office of the Superintendent made the following statement of the tentative agreement between the United Teachers of Flint, Flint Community Schools Superintendent Kevelin Jones and the Flint Board of Education:

“The agreement reached on March 25, 2024, represents a collaborative effort aimed at addressing key issues facing our educational system. It underscores the importance of collaboration and support for our dedicated teachers and scholars, laying the groundwork for a brighter future for Flint Community Schools.”

In October 2023, the teachers union and the district had agreed on a tentative settlement agreement.

Among other changes, the union asked for raises for Flint Community Schools’ teachers, which were to depend on the number of years they had been with the Flint Community Schools district.

But the district said they could not financially afford it.

Teachers have been expressing their frustration with the district not accepting the prior agreement, and they even organized a sickout on March 13 to protest this.

Flint Community Schools teachers are among the lowest paid in the state. Many of the teachers have remained hopeful the district would reach an agreement that would allow them to receive more pay soon.
