Edible Flint to host hands-on learning site, expanding access to farmer education and sustainable agriculture training in Genesee County
FLINT, Mich. — For the first time, Michigan State University’s Organic Farmer Training Program (OFTP) will offer a hands-on learning site in Flint, bringing a statewide farmer education opportunity directly to aspiring growers, urban farmers, educational gardeners and others interested in building their farming skills.
Beginning in 2027, Edible Flint will serve as the program’s newest learning site in partnership with MSU and Extension Educators, joining established locations in Detroit, East Lansing and Grand Rapids. Applications are now open, with a November 15, 2026 deadline for scholarships and applications.
The MSU Organic Farmer Training Program combines hands-on farm experience, interactive online learning, farm tours and guidance from experienced growers to help participants develop the knowledge and confidence to pursue their agricultural goals. Participants will visit more than 20 farms and food system organizations, learn from farmers and agricultural educators across Michigan, and develop a farm plan tailored to their individual values, resources and goals.
The program welcomes people pursuing a variety of paths in agriculture, including starting a farm business, working on a farm, developing a school or community garden, expanding an existing growing operation or producing food for household and community needs.
“Bringing the Organic Farmer Training Program to Flint creates an exciting opportunity for people in our community who want to grow their skills and explore urban farming as a career” said Lauralyn Handyside, executive director of Edible Flint.
She added: “We know there is a strong interest in growing food throughout Flint and Genesee County. This program will help connect aspiring growers with practical education, experienced farmers and a statewide network of people working toward a more sustainable and accessible food system.”

Edible Flint, a Flint-based nonprofit established in 2009, supports Flint and Genesee County residents in growing and accessing healthy food while reconnecting with the land and one another. Through its Educational Farm, events, children’s programs and Garden Partnership Program the organization works with residents, schools, community gardens, and aspiring growers to build gardening knowledge and strengthen local food systems.
Hosting OFTP builds on this work by creating another pathway for residents to develop agricultural skills and explore opportunities in farming. Participants will gain practical experience at Edible Flint while joining a broader learning community of beginning farmers, farmworkers, homesteaders, educational gardeners and food system changemakers from across Michigan.
The 2027 program is scheduled to run from February through November, with learning activities held on Mondays. The hybrid format combines online instruction, hands-on farm learning, and field trips to farms throughout the region and state. Scholarship opportunities are available, including a scholarship for participants at the Flint learning site.
Applications are now being accepted for the 2027 cohort. Applicants should submit an OFTP application, a resume or CV, two letters of recommendation, and arrange a visit to the farm or an online meeting. Scholarship applicants must also complete the scholarship application by November 15, 2026.
