(FLINT, Mich., Oct. 22, 2024) — Mott Community College (MCC) Technology Division will offer a pipefitting class beginning in January of 2025. The class is designed to introduce students to the basic knowledge and skills necessary to work as pipefitters.
“Here at MCC we are continuously developing new programs that train our students to be ready for living wage paying careers,” said Shaunda Richardson-Snell, interim president. “This pipefitting class is our latest addition and it highlights our commitment to providing relevant workforce development programming.”
Students will learn safe pipefitting work practices, how to read and use piping blueprints, make basic repairs to a variety of pipe systems including steam, waste and sprinklers, and how to identify faults and perform basic repairs to pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
“Demand for pipefitters is expected to grow six percent over the next decade, representing about 43,000 positions nationwide,” said Jason Wilson, vice president – Student Academic Success. “We recognized that with the economic growth coming to Genesee County in a variety of industries, there would be a growing demand locally for this skill set. We hope to expand this class into a certification program with ties to professional apprenticeships.”
