Build Your Home Library Event intended to promote literacy for children ages 0-18

Flint, MI—Flint area community members are invited to the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library for the Build Your Home Library Event on Saturday, November 9, from 2 – 4 p.m. Children ages 0 to 18 can select free books to enrich their home libraries. This exciting event, made possible by a grant from A. G. Bishop Charitable Trust, aims to foster a love of reading and enhance literacy skills among young readers in our community.

Every participating child will receive a reusable canvas bag to fill with popular book titles, carefully curated to engage young minds and inspire a lifelong passion for reading. From classic children’s stories to contemporary young adult novels, there will be something for every age group and interest.

Adding to the fun, local favorite DJ Sayless will provide music throughout the event. With a mix of family-friendly tunes, DJ Sayless will keep the energy high as children and teens explore and select new books.

Research has shown that having books at home significantly boosts literacy development in children.

“We believe every child deserves access to high-quality books,” Executive Director Taliah Abdullah said. “This event is more than giving away books; it is about strengthening social and family connections, building a community of readers, and empowering our youth to explore their curiosities through reading.”

By providing free books to families, we hope to minimize barriers to accessing literacy materials and encourage intergenerational bonding through shared reading experiences.
