International Academy of Flint Senior Named Candidate for Presidential Scholar Award

Anthony Lozen is the first student to arrive each day at International Academy of Flint.  His mother, Lynn Allen, is the Academy’s Substitute Teacher and Diagnostic Test Coordinator, and she and Tony arrive early in advance of staff and students.  As soon as Anthony (Tony), enters the office his head is buried in a book, or he’s writing study notes for a class assignment.  Tony is a consummate student, a scholar, in the true sense of the word.

That’s why his selection as a Presidential Scholar Candidate comes as no surprise to one of his teachers.  “Tony is a really hard-working student.  He is self-motivated, and his quest for knowledge goes well beyond most students,” states Sally Abuaita, Tony’s Pre-Calculus II teacher.  “He loves to learn. He pushes me for deeper answers to his questions.  If he’s not satisfied with an answer, he will research topics on his own to gain a further understanding.  Every now and then there is a student whose quest for knowledge is  driven by an inner force.  Tony is one of those students.”  Tony is intending to follow a career as a Forensic Scientist, and has been accepted  by six colleges.

For the Presidential Scholar Award, Tony was selected from over 3.4 million high school seniors nationwide. He is now among a highly-competitive 3,000+ top-rated scholars whose credentials (e.g., ACT, essay quality, leadership, academic achievements, strong character, community and school activities, etc.), will be evaluated and selected by a panel of accomplished individuals. Ultimately, one male and one female student will be chosen from each state and U.S. territory to receive their distinguished award in Washington, D.C. in June.

International Academy staff and students are proud of Tony, and certainly wish him the best, as does mother Lynn.  “Tony is a wonderful son.  He’s respectful, does his chores at home, and works hard to accomplish the goals he set for himself.  I want to thank International Academy for its strong academic program.  The AP (Advanced Placement-College-Level) courses he is taking are preparing him for the college routine.”

However, unfortunately, just last week Anthony was notified he is not one of two students chosen from the State of Michigan.  Regardless, Tony and mother Lynn are elated he was recognized for his academic excellence, and the family congratulates the winning scholars representing Michigan.
