New live music program beckons you to Flint’s downtown

Story and photo by L. M. Land

Flint’s downtown businesses have been struggling a bit due to limited parking during the brick repaving project. (Read about new additional daytime parking on page 8.)

The Greater Flint Arts Council (GFAC) has teamed up with the Mott Foundation to bring something new and tempting to downtown Flint.  Building on the concept of Art Walk, the remaining Fridays of the month will feature music, dance and more with free admission!

Art Walk is a free event every second Friday throughout downtown Flint featuring the art galleries, restaurants, St. Paul Episcopal Church, First Presbyterian Church and more from 6 – 9 p.m.  January’s art walk is on the 12th.  There is live music during art walk, but who gets enough live music in their lives? Musician Todd Gilbert will be featured this month at Art Walk.

New on the first Friday is MUSIC ON THE BRICKS! Five downtown sites* will be featuring music, from 6-9 pm.  On January 5th the following will be playing at:

Sauce – Blue Mykals
Market Tap – The Affair
Churchill’s – Kill Bill
The Cork and Blackstone’s will also have musicians, at press time we did not know who.

If you are a musician interested in booking, contact Harold Hill at 810.252.1673.

New for third Friday is FRIDAY NIGHT FEVER !! (Third Friday Dance Party) Shake your booty in downtown Flint to an eclectic assortment of music at five locations: PopRox dance club, The Loft (the building with the Bourdain mural), Blackstones, Sauce and Churchill’s.  Each location will have a different type of dance music.

Jerrin Sage is organizing this event. He can be reached at the GFAC at 810-238-2787.

The fourth Friday activities are in development and the focus will be family-friendly events.

Go to www.geneseefun.com for updated information.

Even more is happening at the GFAC!  For more music, tune in to their radio station WFAH 102.1 FM , 24 hours a day. Primarily a jazz station, they also play world music, blues and electronic. Listen from your radio, or go to https://live365.com/station/WFAH-102-1-FM-a82829 to stream.

The GFAC is also getting an internal facelift.  Beginning soon, the second floor will become classrooms and administration offices. The third floor will become a theater and dance hall.  The first floor will still have a gallery, operations and WFAH 102.1 offices, but will also be updated.

* Please note the admission for events is free, but you are financially responsible for your own food and drinks at all venues.
