If you are interested in writing a book, The Writers Society of Genesee County is hosting their first writing conference, Taking Our Creativity to the Next Level Friday and Saturday April 25-26, 2014. The time Friday is 4pm-8pm and the time for Saturday is 8am-6pm. The conference will be held at the America’s Best Value Inn and Suites 6075 Hill Rd in Flint. This conference is designed for the aspiring and seasoned writer, poets and networks. There will also be vendors, raffles and a spoken word show featuring Artist She’a Cobb aka Phire.
The Writers Society of Genesee County (WSGC) was founded by entrepreneur and author Cynthia L. Hatcher. The mission of this organization is to motivate, educate and support aspiring and published authors. They offer workshops, conferences, critiquing services, writing groups, writing contests and awards to encourage the artistic expression of creative writing in nonfiction, fiction, poetry and drama.
“I have attended several writing conferences over the years. We have phenomenal writers and poets in Michigan and throughout the Genesee County area. My thought was why can’t we have a writers’ conference here?” said Hatcher concerning the conference.
Hatcher is a native of Flint, Michigan and the owner of HATCHBACK Publishing. Under her company she has published over 25 books for authors and has written 17 books of her own. She has a life goal of writing and publishing 60 books by the tender age of 65. The greatest business accomplishment she has is assisting over 600 student writers in publishing their stories.
The conference team which consists of Hatcher, FaLessia Booker and Renetta Cochran has pulled together a variety of workshops and expert facilitators. Author, award-winning speaker and Master Coach Cheryl Pullins from Baltimore, Maryland will share her expertise on The Business and Branding of a Writer. The Detroit native and author of 30 books, Sylvia Hubbard will help writers understand the difference between Traditional verses Self Publishing.
The other experts hosting workshops from the Flushing, Midland and Flint areas are, Deria Brown, Renetta Cochran, Betty Meyette, Natasha Thomas-Jackson and Cynthia Hatcher. Their workshops include, Marketing Your Writing and Yourself, So You Want to Write a Play, How to Make Your Fiction Come Alive, The Art of Poetic Expression and So You Want to Write Your Memoir.
Leading up to this conference and even afterwards, The Writers Society of Genesee County holds free monthly meetings for writers to get together to critique each others work.
“This meeting is a supportive, comfortable environment for writers to learn and grow. We have beginning writers attend as well as writers working on their next book,” says Hatcher.

Good morning. My name is Kevin woidan. I live in the flint area I really do not know where to begin , but I have a wonderful father who lives up north in the Roscommon area. Any how he has told many stories and accounts of the actual Vernor estate in Lapeer county Michigan He practically grew up there, and I know there was a lot of controversy along with wonderful times as this was an extremely large farming operation and of course the actual people whom had brought the original Vernors soda to our state. Anyhow I wonder if there is anyone whom may be interested in a wonder story about the actual life and times of the vernor family and the Clara family who helped make sure this huge operation stayed afloat Anyhow, to me this is a wonderful piece of history that my father Gerald knows about. Because he was always there. Right down to the controversy that took place when the state of Michigan tried to take over the estate. My father is the last living person who knows all about these areas.
