Genesee County resident/Flint native recognized for success in home health care industry

Sarah De Sonia, RN, director of nursing and clinical services for American Advantage Home Care, has been named to the 2020 class of DBusiness Magazine’s “30 in Their Thirties.” It recognizes metro Detroit business professionals who have achieved notable success in their respective fields and are moving their respective organizations forward.

The Flint native began working as a certified nurse assistant in high school and earned an associate degree with honors in nursing at Mott Community College, Flint.

Prior to working for American Advantage, she worked for a large home health care agency and a skilled nursing facility. Through those experiences she’s seen how home care allows for higher quality of care. She believes it better supports recovery because nurses can see challenges patients face at home that may not be health care issues but can be a barrier to healthy living, such as a broken oven or needing help in applying for Medicaid.

“Home care gives you the opportunity to see and treat the entire patient,” De Sonia explains in her DBusiness Magazine profile, which can be viewed here: http://bit.ly/AAHCDe-Sonia.

“Sarah is a natural leader and a great source of comfort to our clients, as they know she has their best interest at heart,” said Cleamon Moorer Jr. DBA, agency president.

In a profile in the magazine’s 2020 September/October edition, De Sonia said she knew for as long as she could remember that she wanted to provide direct care to patients, but she has been called into management everywhere she has worked.

With 16 years of experience in health care, specializing in home care, she joined American Advantage Home Care August 2019 to work in quality assurance. By the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, she had been promoted to her current role, which placed her in the leadership position of creating and directing an exhaustive Emergency Preparedness Plan to protect staff, clients and their families. She implemented targeted education, advanced procedures and secured personal protective equipment.

As director of nursing and clinical services, De Sonia is responsible for the quality of care provided to clients. This includes compliance and quality review, supervising case management, and education and training for clinical staff.

American Advantage Home Care provides skilled home health care services to those recovering from illness, surgery or injury, or those managing complex health conditions. A multi-cultural team of experienced professionals provides one-on-one care with patients in whatever setting they call home – private home, assisted living, etc. Services include physical, occupational and speech therapy, skilled nursing, home health aide assistance and medical social work as well as helping coordinate community and private resources to maximize patients’ functional independence.

Its geographical service area includes the counties of Monroe, Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Shiawassee, Genesee, Lapeer, Saginaw and Bay, as well as eastern Washtenaw and Livingston counties.
