The Flint Promise Scholarship Program is hosting a virtual informational session this weekend for graduating seniors, parents, school counselors and interested community members. “The Flint Promise scholarship is an investment in the future of Flint,” said James Avery, director of Education & Training at the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce, which administers the scholarship program.
“Not only does the scholarship help students financially but it also provides them with a support system,” Avery added.
“It is a great opportunity for local students to get a quality education at three outstanding institutions located right here in Flint, whether it’s Mott Community College, Kettering University or the University of Michigan-Flint.”
The meeting will cover basics including eligibility requirements, how the scholarship can be used and what kind of wraparound supports are available. Following the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions during the live Q&A session. Representatives from the participating college and universities will also be available to answer questions about admission requirements.
Flint Promise first launched in 2018 and is designed for students who live in the city of Flint and graduate or earn a GED from a high school located in the city of Flint. The scholarship covers up to 100% of a student’s tuition and book fees after federal grants and other scholarships are applied. It also connects each student with a success coach to provide support to help them navigate their academic journey and connect with resources for their continued success.
Currently, there are about 140 students enrolled in the scholarship program, which is available at Kettering University, Mott Community College and the University of Michigan-Flint
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:
Graduate from a high school located within the city of Flint, or receive a GED in the city of Flint, in or after 2018
Reside within the city of Flint at the time of graduation
Graduate with a 1.8 GPA or higher
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Apply to a participating college or university
Be age 24 or younger

Flint Promise was established through $2 million in combined gifts from the Consumers Energy Foundation and Tom Gores, Founder of FlintNOW, and is housed at the Community Foundation of Greater Flint and administered by the Flint & Genesee Chamber.
