Flint man facing trial after U.S. Customs intercepts illegal firearm conversion kits in mail order from China

FLINT — Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said a Flint man is facing trial for six felonies after U.S. Customs intercepted two packages in Chicago in 2024 containing illegal firearm-related merchandise from China that was being shipped to an address in Flint.

Chad Edward Walker, 24, is charged with receiving and concealing a stolen firearm, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a device that is designed or intended to be used to convert a semiautomatic firearm into a fully automatic firearm, and three related felony firearm charges.

According to investigative reports from the Flint Area Narcotics Group, known as FANG, on July 29, 2024 and August 3, 2024, Customs and Border Protection Chicago O’Hare International Mail Branch intercepted two packages containing automatic pistol conversion and automatic AR conversion devices. Both packages originated from China with manifested cargo descriptions of “racing car assembly toys.” Both were addressed to an address on E. Gracelawn Avenue in Flint.
As part of the investigation into this matter, the police obtained an anticipatory search
warrant from the Prosecutor’s Office pending delivery of the parcels. On August 21, 2024, the parcels were delivered by the U.S. Postal Service under surveillance by FANG. Minutes after the delivery, FANG officers executed the search warrants and found the parcels, one of which had already been tossed into the attic.

During the search of the premises, officers discovered a stolen Glock pistol and methamphetamine
pills on top of the refrigerator.

The case is scheduled for trial in March in 7th Circuit Court.
