Flint Alliance for Immigrant Rights to Hold Press Conference Opposing 287(g) Agreements in Genesee County

Flint, MI — The Flint Alliance for Immigrant Rights (FAIR), a coalition of organizations, advocates and community members committed to protecting the rights and dignity of immigrants in the Greater Flint region, will hold a press conference on Tuesday, August 26th, 2025 at 9 a.m. at the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library in response to the Metro Police Authority of Genesee County (Mundy Township and Swartz Creek) entering into a 287(g) taskforce agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations.

FAIR stands unequivocally against any cooperation with federal immigration authorities and against any further agreements with ICE in Genesee County. Coalition members warn that 287(g) partnerships will threaten public safety, erode trust between immigrant communities and law enforcement and facilitate racial profiling, unjust detentions, deportations and family separation.

The press conference will feature remarks from FAIR coalition members, along with voices from the wider community, including a local faith leader, a K–12 educator, a small business owner and a family directly impacted by ICE’s actions locally. Speakers will share community concerns, highlight personal experiences, and present a set of seven demands aimed at ending the 287(g) agreement and preventing similar measures in the future.

FAIR’s Demands for the Metro Police Authority & Genesee County Officials:

3. Investment in Community Safety, Not Deportation – FAIR is demanding funding for community-based public safety programs and support services for immigrant families, such as legal aid, language access and housing.
4. End to Racial Profiling and Raids – FAIR is demanding local law enforcement be prohibited from engaging in immigration enforcement activities including: racial profiling, street raids and checkpoints targeting immigrant and/or Black, Brown and Indigenous communities.
