The 2nd Annual All Children are Created Equal holiday drive strives to make a remarkable holiday for 500 plus children who have a mother and/or father residing in the Genesee County Jail.
It’s important to provide all children the necessary attention, love and care. However, children with parents who are incarcerated have their own unique struggles. Children of incarcerated parents face their own specific and complex concerns and threats to their emotional, physical, educational and financial well-being. Some of these children have both parents incarcerated.
The National Institute of Justice reports “children whose parents are involved in the criminal justice system, in particular, face a host of challenges and difficulties: psychological strain, antisocial behavior, suspension, or expulsion from school, economic hardship and criminal activity”. The lack of systemic support and affection for children who endure disconnection from the parent or parents who are away in jail are grossly intense.

“We want to develop holiday gifting for our youth so that we address generational incarceration early on,” said Percy Glover, Genesee County ambassador.
“We want to ensure that our children not suffer from the implications of intergenerational parental incarceration,” Glover added. “We want to help fill the emptiness and the void children can feel while a parent is in the Genesee County Jail.”
