Area man sentenced Friday, believed to be involved in dogfighting

Written by Tanya Terry

According to the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, a local man left eight dogs chained in a backyard and let six of them starve to death. Investigators believe the man was using the dogs in a dogfighting ring before allegedly abandoning them.

An animal cruelty charge came about when the sheriff’s office discovered the dogs in May 2023 and launched an investigation.

In March, Kidd pleaded no contest to one count of cruelty to four to 10 animals.

“For dogs to starve, for dogs to rot, for live dogs to eat the carcass of other dogs, that is not just inhumane’ it’s immoral, unethical,” said Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson.

On Friday, April 25, 2025, 32-year-old Casey Kidd was sentenced to 36 months of probation and $198 worth of court costs and fees by Judge David Newblatt in Genesee County Circuit Court.

In addition to the animal curtly charge, Kidd pleaded no contest to four weapons charges and the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office dropped three other charges on Friday.
