Why Flint Community Schools decided NOT to return to in-person learning Jan. 24-and what now

COVID-19 test positivity between Jan. 13-19 in Genesee County was 38.7%, according to the MI Safe Start Map, a dashboard designed to monitor the status of COVID-19 indicators across the state of Michigan, powered by the University of Michigan. The statewide test positivity rate was lower, at 32.8%. New cases for Genesee County were 1,465.5 weekly new cases per 100,000 population and 5,947 new cases, the dashboard indicated. The dashboard indicated that statewide the number of new cases was 1,446.8 weekly cases per 100,000 population and 144,487 new cases.

In a letter dated Jan. 19 and posted on the Flint Community Schools Facebook page, Kevelin Jones, the superintendent of Flint Community Schools, communicated with Flint Community Schools families. He acknowledged the past several weeks had certainly provided challenges not only for the Flint Community Schools, but for school districts across the state.

“While we had hoped to return for in-person learning on Monday, Jan. 24, as stated in our most recent communication, after further discussion with local health officials and based on the continued rise of COVID-19 cases across Genesee County and the state of Michigan, we have decided to continue with distance learning until further notice to protect the health and well-being of our schools, families, teachers and staff,” Jones continued. “This means schools will continue distance learning next week, starting January 24, following their regular school schedule each day.”

The superintendent said Flint Community Schools remain committed to providing timely updates as they occur.

“While this decision was not made easily, it is necessary for the greater health of our community,” he said. ”We know it is not an easy time for many across our district, and we want you to know you are not alone.”

Jones said Flint Community Schools is available to help support the school community. If school district families are struggling in any way, they are being asked to contact their teachers of principals for assistance.

Jones apologized for any inconvenience caused as the school district takes the necessary measures to ensure the health, safety and well being of the community.
