Flint City Hall will be open to the public from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday, March 29 and will be closed from 1-5 p.m. in observance of Easter.
Yard waste collection will begin the week of April 1. Priority Waste trash, recycling and yard waste collection are not impacted by the Easter holiday; pickup will continue according to the normal schedule.
After 1 p.m. on March 29, the red drop box in front of City Hall will be open for water payments, property taxes,= and any other correspondence. Police, fire, the water service center and the wastewater plant will continue to operate 24 hours a day.
Youth activities this week
Thursday, March 28, 12- 3 p.m., families can stop by the City of Flint Service Center located at 4805 Clio Rd. to pick up free holiday candy for children. The Clio Rd. location is now open for drive-thru bill pay, Wednesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Friday, March 29, 12-3 p.m., Mayor Neeley is presenting an opportunity for Flint kids to open bank accounts in partnership with Financial Plus Credit Union, located at 3381 Van Slyke Rd.
Kids up to 17 years old can participate. Kids will be able to go in a money machine and add any cash they catch to their savings accounts. All Kids Club Savings Accounts receive a $10 deposit courtesy of Financial Plus.
To sign up for a bank account, child’s and parent/guardian’s social security numbers and parent/guardian driver’s license/Michigan ID with current address are required.
Mayor Neeley has been visiting classrooms weekly to deliver piggy banks and financial literacy lessons to Flint children. He has encouraged classrooms of children to work together to fill up every classmate’s piggy bank. When children fill up these piggy banks and open a bank account, they will receive an additional $5 from Mayor Neeley and an additional $5 from Financial Plus.
Yard waste/compost collection
Beginning April 1, a separate truck will collect yard waste on the same day as residents’ regularly scheduled trash day. Compost materials should be placed at the curb at least 10 feet from regular trash.
All waste must be put to the curb before 7 a.m. on collection days to guarantee pickup. Waste is collected between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Service is never guaranteed at specific times within the 7 a.m.-7 p.m. window.
Acceptable yard waste includes grass clippings, leaves, shrubs and brush trimmings under 6 inches in diameter and less than 4 feet in length.
Examples of unacceptable yard waste are sod, pet waste, dirt, rocks, trash, root balls, branches, and plastics.
All compost material must be placed in paper bags with a maximum capacity of 32 gallons, or an open container with a maximum capacity of 32 gallons, weighing less than 50 pounds.
Raking grass clippings and other yard waste into the street hurts the storm sewer system and can even cause flooding.
