Written by Jameca Patrick-Singleton
What began as a sunny holiday weekend filled with activities throughout the community ended in four shootings being reported between Sunday morning and Monday night. The shootings occurred on the city’s southside, northside and even downtown. Though initially reported by residents through various social media platforms that there were multiple injuries and even a casualty, a spokesperson from the Flint Police department later reported that none of the shootings were fatal.
Monique Williams, a 29-year-old Flint resident describes the scene downtown Flint on
Sunday night as nothing short of chaos.
“I was standing there talking to a friend and all of a sudden I heard gunshots,” Williams said. “Lots of gunshots. Then people were running everywhere, screaming and crying. It was scary. It was like something out of a movie. We should be able to have fun in our own city without worrying about being shot.”
According to the City of Flint’s crime data report, as of May 22 crime is down 11.67% overall from 2021. Five shootings have occurred since the date of the report.
