Flint Innovative Solutions has partnered with Delta Tire to launch an innovative program that will help north Flint residents start a career in the automotive repair industry. The Tire Project is a short-term job training program funded by the Ruth Mott Foundation in which participants will learn job skills to become a tire technician.
“Individuals who participate in The Tire Project will be ready to start a career in automotive repair after completing the intensive training program,” said Athena McKay. “Employers in the auto repair sector are looking for qualified candidates. We at Flint Innovative Solutions are pleased to work with Delta Tire on this innovative program.”
The program’s goal is to prepare nine north Flint residents to work in tire repair shops. The eight-hour program will provide hands-on training to individuals interested in a career in the automotive repair industry. The goal is for participants to be ready to apply for positions as a tire technician. Tire technicians’ earnings start at $12 per hour with fringe benefits. Individuals have the opportunity to advance their career with experience and gain additional skills.
Kyle Krupa, owner/general manager of Delta Tire, is excited to host The Tire Project.
“As the owner of an automotive repair facility, I am always looking to hire qualified candidates,” Krupa said. “I am proud to participate in this training program. It would be nice to find someone who would like to work here. This program has the opportunity to be a beacon of hope for people who are ready to change their lives.”
Flint Innovative Solutions connected with Delta Tire through an introduction from city of Burton councilman, Greg Fenner.
“As a Burton business owner and city councilman, I am proud to be involved in a program that gives people a chance to change their lives by improving their skill set,” Fenner said.
The pilot project will accept nine individuals currently living in north Flint. The application process is competitive, and there will be a screening process to identify participants.
The Tire Project is funded through a grant provided by the Ruth Mott Foundation. The Ruth Mott Foundation’s mission is to advocate, stimulate and support community vitality by focusing on youth, safety, economic opportunity and neighborhoods in north Flint. Flint Innovative Solutions is a community-driven and led organization that provides solutions for today’s health challenges.
