A security guard and father  was shot in the back of the head and killed after not letting a customer’s daughter in the Family Dollar on East 5th Avenue without a state-mandated mask.

There are currently three suspects for the first degree murder of Calvin “Duper” Munerlyn:  Ramonyea Bishop-age 23,  Sharmel Teague- age 45 and Larry Edward Teague Jr.-age 44. The suspects were each charged on May 4.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:40 p.m. on May 1. Security footage showed Munerlyn andTeague got into an argument after he told the woman that her daughter needed a face mask to enter the store. The daughter left the store, but Teague began yelling at Munerlyn. The cashier was asked not to serve Teague and she was asked to also leave the store.

The two drove off in a red GMC Envoy and returned approximately 20 minutes later.  Sharmel Teague’s husband, Larry Teague, and her son, Ramonyea Bishop, came into the store. Larry Teague told the security guard he felt his wife had been disrespected and Bishop then allegedly shot Munerlyn.

Shortly afterwards, police found Munerlyn laying on the floor unconscious and bleeding from his head. He was transported to Hurley Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.

According to Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton,  Munerlyn was a weight lifter. He spent a lot of time at Berton Field House, where he was well-regarded. He used to train other people. He was very well thought of by the Bryant Nolden; executive director of Berston Field House.

“The death of Calvin Munerlyn is senseless and tragic and those responsible will be held accountable to the fullest extent under the law,” Leyton said.

“From all indications, Mr. Munerlyn was simply doing his job in upholding the governor’s executive order related to the COVID-19 pandemic for the safety of store employees and customers,” Leyton added.

Criminal charges are as follows:

Ramonyea Travon count 1: first degree premeditated murder, count 2: felony firearm and count 3: carrying a concealed weapon

Larry Edward Teague count 1: first degree premeditated murder, count 2: felony firearm count 3: felon in possession of a firearm, count 4: felony firearm, count 5: carrying a concealed weapon and count 6: violation of the governor’s executive order.

Sharmel Lashe Teague-count 1: first degree premeditated murder and count 2: felony firearm

Sharmel Teague is in custody and awaiting arraignment on her charges in 67th District Court.

Larry Teague and Bishop; her husband and son, are being sought by police. Leyton warns that anyone assisting the suspects at large in evading police may be charged with a crime. They are considered armed and dangerous.

“It is important that the governor’s order be respected and adhered to and for someone to lose their life over it is beyond comprehension,” Prosecutor Leyton said.

A candlelight vigil was held in Munerlyn’s honor  and drew around 150 people. As of the afternoon of May 4 had the GoFundMe account for Munerlyn’s family to pay for his funeral and provide for his family was more than four times its goal of $10,000.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call 911.

Larry Edward Teague is the other outstanding suspect in the case.
