State Rep. Sarah Anthony (D-Lansing) hosts the premiere of Facing the Rising Sun: Black Leadership in the Michigan Legislature

State Rep. Sarah Anthony (D-Lansing) hosted the premiere of Facing the Rising Sun: Black Leadership in the Michigan Legislature; a short film, last night. Former state Rep. Thomas Stallworth III also joined Anthony for a discussion on the legacy and history of Michigan’s Black legislators after the presentation.

“One of the goals of this project was to make the connection between Black legislators’ current achievements and efforts and Black History,” said Anthony. “Too often when we celebrate and discuss Black history, we focus solely on the great women and men of the past. While we are certainly grateful for their contributions, we also need to uplift the stories of those still on the frontlines fighting for equality and justice. This presentation was just a small look into some of the amazing work of my colleagues in recent years.”

The presentation featured the current African American members of the Michigan House Democratic Caucus, as well as showcased speeches from many former legislators.

The short film can be watched above.
