Spots available in the Great Start Readiness Program

FLINT – The Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) wants parents of Genesee County children who are 4 years old to know that it is not too late to enroll them in a Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP). Expanded funding in fall 2022 has created more spaces for preschool children to access affordable quality preschool.

“Preschool is a vitally important time in a child’s life because 90% of brain development happens by age 5,” said Dr. Jodi Ramos, GISD’s Early Childhood Director.

“The program helps children develop through quality interactions and active play-based learning with other children,” Ramos added. “We want families to know that we are here to help answer their questions and are ready to welcome their child into our program,.”

GSRP classrooms are in schools throughout Genesee County and offer a full-day schedule Monday through Thursday. Some locations also offer transportation. All GSRP programs exceed state requirements for safety and quality and are rated by Michigan’s Great Start to Quality rating system.

Schools throughout Genesee County have GSRP preschool openings right now at low cost or no cost to Genesee County families. Under the current income guidelines, a family of four earning up to $69,375 a year is eligible for the program and some tuition spots are also available. Children who have a qualifying Individualized Education Plan (IEP), children experiencing homelessness or children in foster care are also eligible regardless of income.

This past year has presented challenges for many families still struggling with financial hardships and the emotional strain of the pandemic. Access to quality and affordable childcare and preschool remains an essential need for many families. Local educators want families to know that quality preschool is available in their community and has a critical impact on their child’s kindergarten readiness and life.

Even though the school year is underway, spaces are still available and children can still benefit from participating in GSRP. Parents should call (810) 591-KIDS to enroll their child now.
