Special Election Called for Thetford Township

Genesee County Clerk/Register of Deeds, John J. Gleason has called for a special election to be held Tuesday, May 7, 2019 in Thetford Township at which time the office of Township Clerk will appear on the ballot. The person elected to fill the vacancy shall serve the remainder of the unexpired term which is in November 2020.

This Special Election is being called due to the resignation of the township clerk on Aug. 23, 2018. The Thetford Township Board had 45 days from the date of vacancy to fill the position by appointment. Forty-five (45) days from the resignation date was October 7, 2018. The Thetford Township Board failed to make an appointment within the time allowed by state law {ref: MCL 168.370 (4)}.

Partisan candidates for the office of Township Clerk shall be nominated by the County Republican and Democrat parties. The deadline for partisan nominations are to be submitted to the Thetford Township Clerk’s office not later than 4 p.m. on October 25, 2018.

Those who wish to run for Thetford Township Clerk without party affiliation may do so by filing qualifying petitions at the Thetford Township Clerk’s office not later than 5 p.m. on February 6, 2019. Qualifying petitions need to contain a minimum of 9 signatures and a maximum of 30 signatures.

All cost associated with conducting this special election will be the responsibility of Thetford Township.
