Richfield Township man convicted on multiple child pornography charges

FLINT – Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said his office secured a conviction
against a Richfield Township man after a five-day jury trial involving five felony counts
related to child pornography.

John David Duford, 64, is convicted of:
• Three counts of Child Sexually Abusive Material – Producing, a 20-year felony
• One count of Using a Computer to Commit a Crime, a 20-year felony
• One count of Child Sexually Abusive Material – Aggravated Possession, a 10-year
felony

On May 10, 2016, Richfield Township police were dispatched to a residence in the township regarding reports of child pornography images that were discovered on a computer. The woman who made the report to 9-1-1 informed police upon their arrival that Duford was her roommate, and he had recently called her from jail in Tennessee, asking her to destroy an envelope he had left at the residence. The woman searched for but could not find the envelope.

The phone conversation she had with Duford, along with his request that she destroy an envelope, caused the woman concern and made her suspicious. She then logged onto his computer that he had left behind and discovered dozens of images and several video recordings that showed what appeared to be child pornography.

When Duford had phoned his roommate, he was in police custody in Tennessee on felony charges related to a case involving him and a 14-year-old female runaway. Duford was ultimately convicted of raping her and creating child sexually abusive material involving the teen. Duford was sentenced to prison in Tennessee on those convictions, which delayed the ultimate adjudication and trial on the case arising out of Richfield Township.

“This was a repulsive case, and this man is a danger to children in our community and elsewhere,” said  Leyton. “I’m thankful that after all these years we were able to see justice through and hold him accountable in a court of law. He will now spend his days locked up behind bars where he will no longer be able to prey on the vulnerable for his own satisfaction.”

Prosecutor Leyton acknowledged the hard work of his lead attorney on the case, Rachael Greene, along with the steadfast commitment of the Richfield Township Police for seeing this case through to the very end.

Duford will be sentenced in the 7th Circuit Court on May 7, 2025.
