Promote The Vote Releases Pro-Voter Legislative Scorecard Amid Ongoing Threats to Voting Rights

LANSING – As communities across Michigan celebrate the recent local elections, Promote The Vote (PTV) released its pro-voter legislative scorecard for the 2023-2024 legislative session. This scorecard serves as a simple, free public resource in the ongoing effort to advance common sense approaches to removing barriers to voting and safeguarding Michigan’s elections.

“Our legislative scorecard is an essential accountability tool, allowing the public to clearly see how their elected officials are upholding, or undermining, the right to vote,” said Melanie Macey, policy and government affairs director for Promote The Vote. “In a functioning democracy, lawmakers have an obligation to protect the fundamental right to vote, and the 2023-2024 legislative session saw great progress in this regard. This scorecard helps ensure that Michiganders have the information they need to know which lawmakers have supported the progress Michigan has made in improving access to voting, and which lawmakers have stood in the way.”

PTV’s pro-voter legislative scorecard evaluates key election-related bills based on their impact on democracy and transparency and grades lawmakers based on their votes, bill sponsorships, and public statements, with scores reflecting their commitment to protecting voter access. The 2023-2024 scorecard highlights issues such as early voting procedures, secure automatic voter registration and pre-registration for 16- and 17-year-olds.

“Michigan’s constitution explicitly guarantees the fundamental right to vote,” said Micheal Davis, Jr., executive director of Promote The Vote. “This legislative scorecard provides a clear, factual record of how lawmakers are treating that responsibility. Michigan voters have consistently – and overwhelmingly – supported expanding voting rights, enshrining those rights in our state Constitution, and have taken advantage of those new rights, turning out in record numbers for each election. Voters can use this tool to hold their representatives accountable and advocate for the continued modernization and advancement of our voting rights, ensuring a stronger democracy for us all.”

The completed 2023-2024 legislative scorecard is available now at promotethevotemi.com/advocacy, where Michiganders can learn more about PTV’s pro-voter policy priorities and access related resources.

Promote The Vote remains committed to advocating for policies that remove barriers to voting and safeguarding Michigan’s elections.
