Registration Open for Youth Baseball League RBI

 By Alex LaGrone, Staff Writer

The Flint Jackson Park Youth Baseball League (FJPYBL) RBI is open for registration. Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) is a youth baseball program operated by Major League Baseball. This program is highly recommended for parents who are looking for wholesome activities for their children this summer.

Director and coach, Ronnie Russell, is encouraging Flint area kids to come out and get involved in this fun-filled, spring/summer baseball program. This youth initiative is designed to provide young boys and girls from underserved and diverse communities the opportunity to play baseball.

The program began in 2016 to develop and bring youth baseball to the neighborhoods on the north side of Flint. Youth are encouraged to achieve academic success in school and to exhibit positive behavior at all times. Participants can also request mentoring and tutoring if needed.

An educational component of leadership skills is also included in the program to build future leaders. Steven Covey’s, Leader in Me /7 Habits of Highly Effective People, principals are weekly assignments. Participating youth have an opportunity to express how each habit can be applied to baseball, school, and life.

Youth are encouraged to participate in local educational events, especially at the Flint public library. Students who complete the assignments are rewarded with special gifts at the end of the season. This year rewards include computers, bikes, and gift cards.

The success of the program is dependent upon strong family participation and volunteers. All volunteers must agree to a background check.

There are several special events planned this year, including: a bus trip to a Detroit Tiger’s game at Comerica Park; Play Ball Event, Saturday, June 1 at Eagle’s Nest Academy; Applewood Tour/Activity; and a final game/awards/picnic on Saturday, August 10 at Hardenbrook (Jackson) Park.

2019 CANUSA GAMES

Tryouts for the 2019 CANUSA All-Star Game will be held Sunday, August 18, 2019 at Berston Field House. A fish fry/youth against seniors baseball game will be held Saturday, September 14, 2019.

Attendance is very important for the support of the program. Youth are evaluated at each stage for team placement. Training clinics will be held weekly for six weeks to focus on specific skills – catching, throwing, sliding, batting, and pitching as well as the fundamental play and rules of the game.

League play will be held weekly beginning the week of June 4, 2019. Practice schedules will be determined by the coach and parents.

Registration fee is $20. which covers the cost of a practice shirt and a full uniform (hat, shirt, pants, belt, land socks). Also included are snacks and transportation and the cost of field trips. The program is open to boys and girls, ages 4-12.

Training clinics will be held inside at Eagles Nest Academy at 5005 Cloverlawn Dr. and Pierson Rd. now through May 29, 2019. Outside play as weather permits will be held at Hardenbrook “Jackson Park”, 2700 Alexander St., June 1 through August 17, 2019.
