Our stories matter – panel to discuss the empowering effects of Telling Our Stories

Flint, MI—MW Gallery presents a timely panel discussion: Telling Our Stories. Local creative voices from multiple arts genres will discuss why we tell our stories and the importance of remembering and embracing our narratives.
Featuring panelists Bob Campbell (Writer, Author – Flint, MI), Mario Moore (Visual Artist – Detroit, MI), Tunde Olaniran (Multi-disciplinary Artist, Musician – Flint, MI), and Shani Womack (Professional Storyteller, Counselor – Flint, MI) and moderated by Lisa Ze Winters(Assoc. Professor, African American Studies and English, Wayne State Univ. – Detroit, MI).
Every culture has a story to tell, and the arts have long been a means for telling those stories. Whether communicating history and world events or the day-to-day activities of ordinary people, narratives define our existence; they influence society, shaping opinions, imparting values, stirring imagination and creating communities. The artists appearing on this interdisciplinary panel will share how they utilize narratives in their art practices to connect with and uplift their audiences.
This program is presented in conjunction with MW Gallery’s exhibition Figuratively Speaking, on view February 14 through August 23, 2025. This exhibit, drawn from the Mott-Warsh Collection, highlights artists’ use of the human form to communicate identity, social commentary and shared emotions and experiences. Relying on body language, gestures and facial expressions, these artists convey narratives that are fully realized and others with endings to be completed by the viewer.
Telling Our Stories will take place at MW Gallery on Thursday, August 14, 2025. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Program starts at 6 p.m. MW Gallery is located at 815 S. Saginaw St., Flint, MI 48502. Gallery entrance is on E. Court St. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided. Gallery hours are Thursdays and Fridays 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Saturdays 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.; and the 2nd Friday of each month 11 a.m.– 9 p.m. for Flint ARTWALK. About MW Gallery and the Mott Warsh Collection

MW Gallery is the permanent home of the Mott-Warsh Collection (MWC)—a privately owned, publicly shared fine art collection that comprises over 1100 works by artists of the African diaspora and those who reflect on it. The gallery features expansive exhibitions drawn from the collection and facilitates community engagement with art through its programs.

The MWC was established by Maryanne Mott and her late husband Herman Warsh in 2001. Their primary intent was to bring art into non-traditional venues where it could be encountered by people as they went about their daily lives. They formed community partnerships with institutions that had an interest in making the collection visible to their memberships, clients, visitors, and participants. Today, rotating exhibits of MWC artworks can be found in the public library, churches, health clinics, colleges, universities, and more in the greater Flint region. The collection also lends to internationally and nationally touring museum exhibitions.
