FLINT, MI (November 1, 2023) –On any given night in Genesee County there are 383 people experiencing
homelessness (according to the HUD verified 2023 Point in Time count).

For the entire month of November, The Flint/Genesee County Continuum of Care (CoC) is recognizing Homeless Awareness Month (HAM) with a social media campaign designed to
educate, advocate, and remove barriers for those in need of housing.

Homeless Awareness Month takes place every November in Michigan to raise awareness about issues relating to housing insecurity and homelessness and to get communities invested in making a difference. Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness (MCAH) leads the state’s communication and awareness raising campaign.

The statewide theme this year is “Everyone Has a Role in Ending Homelessness”. Michigan’s observance,
which has taken place for nearly 20 years, has become an essential part of collective effort to promote
awareness and understanding of those experiencing homelessness.

The Flint/Genesee CoC is a county-wide membership consortium of nonprofit agencies, businesses, community groups, faith communities and government agencies that incorporate changes to emphasize best practices, collaboration, conversation, and dialogue in promoting progress within our community to end homelessness.

Federally mandated goals of the CoC include:
• Promote a community-wide commitment to the goal of ending homelessness.
• Provide funding for efforts to quickly re-housing individuals and families who are homeless, which
minimizes the trauma and dislocation caused by homelessness.
• Promote access to and effective use of mainstream programs.
• Optimize self-sufficiency among individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

The Flint/Genesee County CoC meets regularly to discuss community challenges related to homelessness best practices and opportunities for collaboration. Monthly Meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month from 9 – 10:30 a.m. The CoC provides regular updates on funding opportunities, community training events and other opportunities.

The Flint/Genese County CoC housed nearly 100 individuals and families since September 2022.

The Flint/Genesee County CoC will host a social media campaign with weekly themes as they advocate for
change in our community and reduce stigma around homelessness. The official kickoff of the campaign will
happen November 6. Weekly themes focus on education, advocacy, action and the story of homelessness
in Genesee County. To share or tag please follow us on the Flint/Genesee County CoC Facebook page
