North Flint Neighborhood Action Council offering free Civic Leadership Academy for Flint residents

Flint, MI – The North Flint Neighborhood Action Council (NFNAC), in partnership with Mayor Sheldon Neeley and the Michigan League for Public Policy (The League), has opened registration for the first City of Flint Civic Leadership Academy. The Civic Leadership Academy will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, January 6 via Zoom.

About The Program

The Civic Leadership Academy (CLA) and the Civic Leadership Youth Academy (CLYA), which will begin in April 2022, are both engaging 8-week programs that provide residents an in-depth look at government with an intense focus on city government. The CLA includes hands-on demonstrations and presentations that give participants an insider view of how the city of Flint operates. The Civic Leadership Academy was created to foster civic engagement by developing residents’ understanding of city government and how local offices and services are employed to serve communities. With this knowledge, participants will be better equipped to lead collective action towards the advancement of neighborhoods and citizens’ quality of life. The program is made possible with funding from the Ruth Mott Foundation.

CLA Goals:

• Build capacity of leaders to become effective neighborhood advocates by educating them on how their city government functions and operates

• Construct a source of leadership from communities to develop representation on city advisory committees, boards of commission, neighborhood associations and a variety of other city and public participation opportunities

• Encourage the development of collaboration and partnership between a wide-range of community organizations, including neighborhood and business associations, where there may be opportunities to work on neighborhood-level issues

Program Agenda

The sessions will be held virtually on Tuesdays from 6-8 p.m. from January 11 through March 4. Participants will learn about various aspects of local government, including the structure of government, city budgeting, public works operations and economic development to name a few.

This eight-week engagement opportunity is open to 25 city of Flint residents and people can start signing up at https://forms.gle/4eQJJy8wRA4Y6NrQ7 or call (810) 219-9515.
