New podcast from Sloan Museum of Discovery, Discover Uncover, highlights historical artifacts and events from Genesee County

Sloan Museum of Discovery launched a new podcast, Discover Uncover, on November 30, 2023. The podcast delves deep into the history of Genesee County using the artifacts and archives from Sloan Museum’s historical collection as a jumping off point.

The hosts of Discover Uncover are Sloan Museum’s Curator of Collections, Geoff Woodcox, and Community Engagement Coordinator, Jerome Threlkeld. Woodcox has a vast amount of historical knowledge about the artifacts currently displayed in Sloan’s History Gallery and stored collections, while Threlkeld imparts commentaries and questions as a lifelong resident of the Flint community.

Each episode focuses on Sloan’s artifacts or an issue highlighted in the History Gallery.

Episode 1 delves deep into the historical significance of the 1953 Flint Beecher Tornado, the deadliest tornado on record up until the Joplin, Missouri, tornado of 2011. Woodcox reads rare accounts from high schoolers who lived through the tornado, and gives details of how the Flint community pulled together to support Beecher residents.
The second episode will go live at the end of December featuring the impact of segregated housing practices experienced by Flint residents from the early 1900s through the 1960s.

The podcasts can be watched by going to SloanLongway.org/DiscoverUncover, or listen on your favorite podcast apps. Leave a question or comment at Podcast@SloanLongway.org. Voicemails may be used in future episodes.
