McLaren Flint Hospital has high hopes for the use of the former Ballenger Manor Apartments after Board of Commissioners approves property’s sale

Written by Tanya Terry

It’s taken nearly 10 years for the process to be completed, but Ballenger Manor Apartments have now been demolished.

The apartments were located south of McLaren-Flint hospital, on Ballenger Highway.

Now, instead of being an eyesore, the hospital is approved to purchase the property.

Because the Genesee County Board of Commissioners approved the sale of the land to McLaren Flint Hospital at their December 11 meeting, the hospital will pay the back taxes and half the demolition costs if the deal goes through. The property is currently expected to be sold for $247,000.

Two entities had fought in court over the ownership of the property, leaving the taxes unpaid and which left the property in a very poor state.

Earlier this year, the Treasurer’s Office foreclosed on the property earlier this year due to  the delinquent property taxes.

When and if the deal is finalized, McLaren has said they will use the property “for future expansion based on the community’s needs.”
