(FLINT, Mich. Sept. 13, 2021) — Mott Community College (MCC) is seeking a new trustee to replace Matthew Norwood, who will resign from the Board of Trustees effective October 1, 2021. His resignation was announced at the August 23 meeting of the MCC Board of Trustees.
“It has been a pleasure to serve with Matthew on the MCC Board of Trustees,” said Board Chair Anne Figueroa. “His commitment to the college has helped MCC create the ideal learning environment to deliver a high-quality and life-changing education for all our students.”
Norwood, of Fenton Township, was originally appointed by the Board in 2013 to fill a vacancy created by Trustee Pam Faris’ election to the Michigan House of Representatives and subsequent resignation. In 2014, he was elected to serve the remainder of Faris’ term, and was elected to his own full term in 2018. As a member of the Board, Mr. Norwood served as a member of the Personnel Committee, Goals and Objectives Committee and was elected Board secretary earlier this year.
A Flint-area attorney and third-generation MCC alumnus, Norwood is a member of the Michigan and Genesee County Bar Associations, and currently serves on the board of the Hundred Club of Genesee, Shiawassee and Lapeer Counties. He is the founder and former chairperson of the Flint Cultural Center’s Young Professional Council and was Vice Chair of The Foundation for Mott Community College. Norwood has also worked with the Greater Flint Arts Council, McFarlan Home and several other groups and organizations.
Beginning September 13, the MCC Board will accept applications from those interested in filling the vacancy. To be eligible for appointment, applicants must be:
- A registered voter at least 18 years of age;
- A U.S. citizen;
- A resident of the state of Michigan for at least 30 days;
- A resident of the College District for at least 30 days. The College District consists of the 21 school districts contained within the Genesee Intermediate School District.
The appointment will expire December 31, 2022.

Applications must include:
- A signed letter indicating the applicant’s desire to be considered for appointment to the MCC Board of Trustees;
- A personal resume; and
- Proof of eligibility affirming the applicant is a resident of the college district.
Once applications have been received, the remaining trustees will conduct interviews and seek to make an appointment during an open meeting. Per Board policy, the Board shall not be restricted to consideration of those submitting an application.
