MCC President Named Mildred Bulpitt Woman of the Year by AAWCC

Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea, President of Mott Community College, (MCC), received the Mildred Bulpitt Woman of the Year Award from the American Association of Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC) April 14 at the organization’s annual awards breakfast.

The Mildred Bulpitt Woman of the Year Award is given for outstanding leadership and mentorship to provide opportunities for women in community colleges. Dr. Walker-Griffea was recognized for her tireless work uplifting and leading women, championing social justice and crafting communities where all can succeed.

The President of the MCC Board of Trustees said the honor is well-deserved. “Dr. Beverly is an outstanding mentor and role model to students and colleagues alike,” said Michael Freeman. “She often speaks about the need to reach back and pull others forward. She finds the time to listen so that she can ensure that she is supporting a new generation of leaders.”

“I am thrilled and honored to have received the Mildred Bulpitt Woman of the Year award,” said Dr. Walker-Griffea.  “Dr. Mildred Beatrice Bulpitt was the Founder of the AAWCC and its prestigious Leaders Institute. She took a stand for equality in community college leadership many years ago, so that women like myself could sit in the president’s chair today,” Walker-Griffea said. “I am proud to be a part of her legacy of advancing women through the leadership pipeline.”

Bulpitt founded the AAWCC Leaders Institute to encourage and prepare women for leadership roles in higher education. The number of female community college presidents increased from approximately 50 in 1980, when the Leaders Institute began, to 344 by 2015.

The American Association for Women in Community Colleges is the leading national organization that champions women and maximizes their potential at community colleges. Founded in 1973, AAWCC provides education, career development, and advancement to women educators and students at community colleges. As a council of the American Association of Community Colleges, AAWCC and its members are committed to equity and education of all women students at community colleges across the nation.
