Mayor Neeley announces $1 million investment to shield residents from GLWA rate increase

FLINT–In response to this week’s decision by the Great Lakes Water Authority to impose a 5.8 percent rate increase, Mayor Sheldon Neeley on February 27 announced a plan to add $1 million to the City of Flint’s Water Stabilization Fund to ensure the increase does not impact residents.

“Flint families have carried more than their fair share of burdens,” said Mayor Neeley. “We will not allow this rate hike to be passed on to our residents. This investment reflects our unwavering commitment to protecting households and maintaining affordable water access.”

Mayor Neeley was joined by Council President Candice Mushatt, Finance Chair Judy Priestley, and 3rd Ward Councilwoman LaShawn Johnson in opposing the rate increase and affirming their shared commitment to shielding residents from additional costs.

If approved by the City Council, the strengthened Water Stabilization Fund will fully offset the GLWA-imposed increase through fiscal year 2028.

In addition, the City of Flint will continue funding its free water filter distribution program for two years after state funding concludes later this year, ensuring residents maintain access to essential water resources.
