Lions Open Season With a Victory

By: Alex LaGrone
Coming into this season the Lions have high expectations with the atmosphere new coach Jim Caldwell has created. The Detroit Lions started out with a bang by beating the New York "Football" Giants 35-14. Quarterback Matthew Stafford connected with Calvin Johnson with two first quarter touchdown passes to jump start the season on a good start.

The Giants secondary was over matched by the Lions receivers, especially Johnson. Giants safety, Antrel Rolle, called the game disgusting,"we didn't have enough fight." Johnson totaled 7 catches for 164 yards, while newly acquired wideout, Golden Tate, had 6 catches for 93 yards. Stafford passed for 346 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Up next for the Lions are the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers beat the Tampa Bay Bucs last week 20-14 without its starting quarterback Cam Newton. Panthers coach Ron Rivera expects Newton to start against the Lions this week. The Lions are looking to continue with its winning ways with Stafford leading the way.

Tennis note: Serena Williams defeated Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 6-3, in the U.S.Open to win her 18th tennis major. This was the first major for Williams this year. The victory rescued her season as she dominated her opponent. With that victory Williams tied legends Chris Everet and Martina Navratilova for fourth place in all time major victories in the history of the game.
