Jury convicts man in 2021 shooting that left woman paralyzed

FLINT — Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said a jury returned a guilty verdict
against a 29-year-old Flint man related to a shooting last summer that left a woman
paralyzed.

Troy D-Duane Williams was convicted on 13 counts, including four counts of assault with
intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, discharge of a firearm into a vehicle
causing serious injury, two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, one count of resisting
and obstructing police and five counts of felony firearm.

According to testimony at trial, on the evening of July 26, 2021, Williams got involved in a
verbal exchange with another man at a home on Grand Traverse Street in the city of Flint.
At one point, Williams began waving his guns around in a threatening fashion.
Later in the evening, after Williams had left the scene, the other man called his sister and
her roommate to come and pick him up. Just as they were leaving, the other man sees
Williams had returned and so he tells the driver “It’s them. Go!” The driver quickly
accelerate as she was trying to leave and Williams opened fire on the vehicle striking the
driver once and leaving her paralyzed.

A police fugitive team was able to locate and arrest Williams in a scuffle a few days later.

“Once again, we see the violent use of a firearm to settle a verbal argument on the streets of Flint leaving a young woman paralyzed for life,” said  Leyton. “The defendant has been found guilty for his actions, and we will be seeking the maximum sentence allowed under the law as we seek justice under the law for the young lady who was struck by his bullet and has had her life changed forever.

Williams will be sentenced on April 25 in Genesee County Circuit Court.
