FLINT – Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said a jury found a Flint woman guilty of Child Abandonment after the woman dropped off her two-year-old son on someone’s front porch on a cold December night in 2023.
Mytekeya Ambershana Johnson, 23, is convicted of one count of Child Abandonment, a felony punishable by up to ten years in prison.
According to testimony at trial and investigation reports, City of Flint Police were dispatched to Verdun Street around 8:00 PM on December 9, 2023 reference a report of a child abandonment. Records indicate the temperature at that time was 35 degrees.
According to a witness, Johnson pulled into the witness’s driveway and dropped off Johnson’s then 2-year-old son on the woman’s front porch. The witness said she was dating the father of Johnson’s child but had never met the child before until that night. After Johnson put her child on the front porch and pulled away, the child followed her car into the street. The witness then went and grabbed the child and took him into her home. She called her boyfriend, the father of the child, and he said he was at work and couldn’t come get the child so, the witness called police and an officer responding to the scene took the child to Hurley Medical Center and Child Protective Services were called.
Johnson was alerted that the child was taken to Hurley and she went there to pick him up. She lied to police saying that she had dropped her son off with an unidentified 13-year-old family member at the house. She also told them the child’s father doesn’t take care of him so someone else can. Upon identifying the 2-year-old as her child, she was arrested at the hospital for child neglect.
Johnson resisted arrest but was ultimately handcuffed and taken to jail.
Johnson will be sentenced on April 13.
