FLINT – Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said a 66-year-old Flint man has been found guilty of
shooting and killing another man in an altercation that centered around a woman.
Clifford O’Neal Harvey was found guilty on October 23, 2024 on all counts for the February 18, 2023 murder of Carl Edward Jones.
According to the evidence presented at trial, Harvey had made plans to spend the weekend with his
girlfriend at a motel on Miller Road in Flint Township but his girlfriend stood him up. Harvey and a friend
then drove around looking for her and found her in a parked vehicle at Riviera Party Shoppe on North
Saginaw Street with Jones. After a verbal confrontation between the parties, both vehicles exited the
parking lot and Harvey retrieved a handgun from his home before he and his friend went looking for his
girlfriend again.
A short time later, they found her with Jones parked at Zerka’s liquor store on West Carpenter Road.
Harvey approached their vehicle on foot, opened the passenger side door and fired two shots at Jones
who was in the drivers seat. Harvey then hurried around to the driver’s side door and fired one more shot
at Jones. During the assault, Jones did manage to fire his own gun one time at Harvey but missed.
Video surveillance of the store parking lot and a dashboard mounted camera from Harvey’s friend’s
vehicle provided additional evidence at trial.
“This was a very unfortunate, unnecessary and tragic incident involving gun violence that took the life of
one man and will put another man behind bars for the rest of his life,” said Prosecutor David Leyton.
“As always, I am proud of the work my staff has done on this case including assistant prosecutors Sam
Fleet and Steve Ellis in Circuit Court, Chris Larobardiere who handled the District Court exam and all our
support staff from secretaries and paralegals to our victim advocates.
Leyton continued: “It truly is a team effort and, I am pleased that we crossed the goal line victorious for justice, for the victim and his family, and for our community.”
Leyton noted that Harvey had a significant criminal record prior to this incident including
multiple felonious assaults, aggravated stalking, illegal entry and other assaults and gun charges. He
faces life in prison without the possibility of parole when he is sentenced on November 25.
