Hypnotherapist John Tomlinson sentenced to prison for sexual assaults

FLINT – Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said former hypnotherapist John Tomlinson
was sentenced today to a minimum of 15 years in prison for his conviction on multiple sexual
assault charges involving patients.

In August, a jury convicted Tomlinson, 73, of criminal sexual conduct first degree, five counts of
criminal sexual conduct second degree, and one count of unlawful imprisonment related to
incidents that occurred at his Grand Blanc Township therapy office between 2013 and 2017.
During the trial, victims testified they were under various states of mental incapacity while
undergoing hypnotherapy when Tomlinson assaulted them. Three women were named victims
in the trial but authorities received complaints from many more with some allegations going as
far back as 2007.

“As I’ve said before, John Tomlinson’s actions are reprehensible,” said Prosecutor Leyton after
the sentenced was handed down.

“His allocution today in court was just as reprehensible as he showed very little remorse or
concern for his victims and focused instead almost entirely on himself in an effort to paint
himself in a positive light,” Prosecutor Leyton said.

“Fortunately, the Judge saw through Tomlinson’s weak attempt at salvaging his image and
sentenced him to a lengthy term of prison,” Prosecutor Leyton said.

Prosecutor Leyton noted that Tomlinson will be 88 years old before he is considered eligible for
parole.
